Our History
Berkley’s
has been operating since February 2002 as a purpose built Restaurant,
Bar and Function Facility within the Rendezvous Hotel.
A brief history of the Site
The now heritage-listed Anzac Square
building, which houses The Rendezvous Hotel, was once home to the
Queensland Government Offices. Prior to construction of the Queensland
Government Offices, the site was occupied by the Old Normal School
(opened 1863) and a fire station (built in 1890)
Built in stages commencing in 1931 and
completed in 1959, the Anzac Square Building forms an integral part
of an architectural design for the block bounded by Edward, Ann,
Creek and Adelaide Streets, and consisted of separate state and
federal government offices flanking a memorial square.
With the redevelopment of the site completed
in 1999, the building’s Queensland marble hallways and stairwells,
original art deco lighting and elaborate architraves and cornices
have all been utilised in the refurbishment, while the classic external
granite and sandstone finishes and pressed metal awnings have remained
untouched.
Built at the time when attention to detail
was the order of the day, The Anzac Square Building, which houses
The Rendezvous Hotel and Berkley’s on Ann, has continued with this
tradition, from the redevelopment of the site through to the facilities
and outstanding service offered to guests.
The hotel offers guests the choice of
138 spacious and beautifully appointed luxury rooms. Maximising
accommodation space for guests has come through the ability to configure
rooms into hotel rooms, 1 bedroom apartments and 2 bedroom apartments.
